Partners with San Diego service agencies to promote HIV/AIDS awareness and treatment

San Diego, CA – ion is proud to announce a revival of "The Normal Heart" by Larry Kramer with an opening night set for November 19, 2016 at ion’s BLKBOX theatre. Co-directed and produced by Executive Artistic Director Claudio Raygoza and Producing Artistic Director, Glenn Paris, the production features Raygoza as the Kramer-like Ned Weeks, Associate Artistic Director Kim Strassburger as Dr. Emma Brookner, Daren Scott in his ion debut as Ned’s brother, Ben, and Paris in multiple roles.

Partnering with San Diego-based service agencies and health providers such as Christie’s Place, Mama's Kitchen, the San Diego LGBT Community Center, and the UCSD AntiViral Research Center/Lead the Way, ion has launched an initiative to position the production as a forum to heighten awareness and deepen education of HIV/AIDS. Partners will provide audiences with information on their services and lead postshow discussions at select performances.

Larry Kramer wrote this seminal play over 30 years ago, setting it in New York City at the very beginning of the HIV/AIDS crisis. It combines humor and love, as well as rage against widespread apathy in the government, media and health industries at a time when thousands were infected and dying from this ravaging illness. In the play, Kramer’s avatar – Ned Weeks – leads a small but courageous group of organizers that stepped up to face off against the silence many felt was tied to ongoing prejudice against the gay community as AIDS was originally considered just a ‘gay’ disease. First produced Off-Broadway in 1985, "The Normal Heart" has seen over 600 productions worldwide including the Tony-winning Broadway revival in 2011. An HBO movie in 2014 was honored with multiple Emmy awards and nominations.

"The Normal Heart" features returning ion artists Stewart Calhoun (Sunday in the Park with George), and Alexander Guzman (Lydia), and in their ion debuts: Fred Hunting, Michael Lundy and Joel Miller. The production team includes Claudio Raygoza (Scenic/Projections/Sound), Kevin Kornburger (Lighting, Stage Manager), ion member, Mary Summerday (Costumes), Isaac Fowler (Assistant Director), Melissa Hamilton (Properties) and Lisa Meyer (Assistant Scenic Designer).
